Haji Ali Dargah, Mumbai

Mumbai is a very cosmopolitan city. One can find people of all religious staying over here. Due to its diversity and the people, it is home to some of the most famous temples, churches and mosques. Amongst the many famous mosques in Mumbai, the first name that comes to my mind is the famous Haji Ali Dargah. So lets us have a look at it.

Haji Ali Dargah is one of the most popular religious places in Mumbai, visited by people of all religions alike. Haji Ali Dargah is one of India’s most famous and prestigious landmarks situated about 500 yards from the Mumbai shoreline in the middle of the Arabian Sea off Lala Lajpatrai Marg.

A mosque and a dargah, it contains the tomb of Sayed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari.

Constructed in 1431, it is built on a tiny islet located 500 meters from the coast in the middle of Worli Bay. The Islet is linked to the city by a narrow causeway, which becomes a highlight because it has the sea on both the sides.

It is a marvel of Indo-Islamic architecture, a place where irrespective of faith and religion people visit to get the blessings of the saint. The structure has white domes and minarets reminiscent with the Mughal architecture of the period. Haji Ali Dargah comprises of the Dargah Complex, the Kinara Masjid adjacent to the entrance, the concrete pathway leading from Lala Lajpat Rai Road to the Dargah Complex (islet) and the Haji Ali Dargah Trust Offices. A short flight of marble steps leads into the Dargah Complex where the body of the Saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari is enclosed in a tomb.

The location of the Dargah serves as one of the major attractions luring tourists in the area.  With the sea forming the backdrop, Haji Ali becomes a remarkable sight. The entire structure is spread over an area of around 5,000 sq. m. and stands adorned with an 85-foot high minaret.

About 10 - 15 thousand people visit the Dargah daily. The number of visitors increases to 20 - 30 thousand, on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Lakhs of devotees visit the Dargah on the second day of Ramadan Eid and Bakri Eid, and during which the pathway leading to the Dargah Complex looks like a Sea of Humanity.

People from all parts of the world without restrictions of caste, creed and religion visit the Dargah to offer their prayers. Some pray for wealth, others for health, children, marriages, etc.
